After his first two directorial ventures U Me Aur Hum and Shivaay, Ajay Devgn has taken the baton in his hand for his third directorial venture Runway 34 . The film was ready and awaiting released but like all other films was stuck due to the lockdown. The wait seems to have been fruitful as Ajay could work on his craft better.
About Runway 34 as everyone knows is a film inspired by the true event of the Jet Airways Doha to Kochi flight 9W 555, a Boeing 737–800 aircraft that had a narrow escape on 18 August 2015, after facing difficulties to land at the Cochin International Airport due to bad weather and unclear visibility at 5:45 in the morning. It was one of the scariest and disastrous aviation mishaps in the recent times. The film was originally titled Mayday but the makers finally decided to rename it Runway 34.
Story: Captain Vikrant Khanna (Ajay Devgn), is a high-flying pilot who is confident arrogant about his abilities, especially to handle turbulence and crisis 35000 feet above sea-level. He’s employed with an airline company. On what starts off as a routine trip from Dubai to Cochin, he encounters torrid weather conditions. Despite being given suggestions first officer Tanya Alburqurque (Rakul Preet Singh), he change the flight’s alternate destination but eventually sends out the ‘May Day’ message just before landing the flight, a few inches shy of a crash.
The second half becomes a court martial drama where Amitabh Bachchan makes an entry and simply takes over every scene. Ajay Devgn’s subtleness is encountered by the aggressive Amitabh Bachchan. Something to be watched out for.
Direction: Ajay Devgn has kept the audiences on the edge of their seats with this directorial venture. While South films have been roaring at the box office, here comes a film that will give relief to Bollywood. Technically one of the best films made by Ajay and he does not fall short of it anywhere. The actor director has used 7 camera set ups as far as the flight scenes are concerned. While actors like Angira Dhar and Boman Irani could have been given more leverage there is hardly any scope for talented actors like them.
Overall a great film to watch over the weekend.
