Producer Sandip Singh has turned director with this out of the box topic Safed and his choice of actors for his debut directorial venture also speaks volumes. Starring debutante Abhay Varma, Meera Chopra, Barkha Bisht and Jameel Khan the movie recently released on Zee 5.
While he has co-produced many blockbusters like Rowdy Rathore (2012), Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi (2012), Ram Leela (2013), Mary Kom (2014) and produced Aligarh Sarbjit (2016), Bhoomi (2017) and PM Narendra Modi (2019) and Jhund (2021) independently, one can say that Sandeep Singh has indeed come a long way when he chose a topic like Safed for his directorial debut.
Plot: The film deals on the life of a beautiful widow Kaali (Meera Chopra) torn by the atrocities of the society which maltreats her and shows the underbelly of the transgender’s lives and how they have to face the society. Set in Varnasi in the 1990. It begins with the death of a transgender whose body is being cursed. The tribe is being headed by Guru Maa (Jameel Khan). The hero Chaandi (Abhay Varma), lives with Guru Maa and her associates. Rejected by his parents who refuse to accept him as their child he is yet to come to terms with life of a transgender. One incident gives him the courage to life his life independently. He recalls all the atrocities meted out to him by people and decides to finally end his life. When he tries to drown himself he finds Kaali and falls in love with her. Kaali tells Chaandi that she does not like transgenders and that she is petrified of them. When they decide to go ahead with their relationship there comes the blow. Kaali finds out that Chaandi is a transgender by birth. What happens thereafter forms the crux of the movie.
Debutant Abhay Varma has done an excellent job for his first full length movie. Meera Chopra has given a restrained performance. Barkha Bisht has done complete justice to her role. Jameel Khan though has been totally wasted in his character.
Producer-director Sandeep Singh has chosen a bold topic for his debut venture and also given hard hitting dialogues alongwith Rishi Virmani. Depsite having great music by Rekha Bhardwaj. It could not lift the film. Editing by Rajesh G Pandey and Rahul Om Reniwal could have been crisp to make the movie better.
Overall: A film like Safed will have its choice audience since its releasing on the OTT. If you are a movie buff and like to intense movies, Safed can be a great choice.
