Overview
Uday Gupta finds himself as a loner male student in the Gynaecology department. His reluctance leads to chaos, confusion, comedy and eventually, great camaraderie with his fellow classmates.
Plus Points
1) Ayushmaan Khuranna has done a decent job, Rakul Preet Singh is average (pretty insignificant role). Shefali Shah is extraordinary and Sheeba Chaddha again, is average.
2) Thought of the film is good that Dr's first job is to save the Human life.
3) Location of Bhopal, photography and producer design of the film are good.
Minus Points
1) Direction
Director makes a debut with this film. She handled the subject maturely but couldn't do much because of poor writing and screenplay.
2) Story, Screenplay and Dialogues
Story is unique - a male gynaecologist practicing in a village. Screenplay is ordinary. Dialogues are mundane (quite often has a double meaning). Film has glaring errors in story. Only thing that stands out is the thought of the story which is ‘doctor’s first responsibility is to save a human life.’
Writer could not deliver the thought properly. Too many loopholes in the screenplay:
a) Why hero's mothers’ character is portrayed to be loose. She posts selfies on Facebook, has a YouTub channel and is active on Tinder. She is friendly with males and is into dating. Her act gets justified in the climax.
b) Hero's friend stays with him on a rental, pretty much looks like a beggar/peon. He is half naked throughout. Why’d he be on a rental with a friend? What the hell is he doing in the film? His character is not funny for which he was involved in the film. He is a big liability with poor characterisation by the writer.
c) Ragging scenes by senior doctors are poorly written. The scene of apologizing by the hero to the seniors isn't justified.
d) Abortion of underage girls have been forced into the drama. Lastly, heroine is already engaged in the film. Then why does she kiss the hero trying to be extra friendly with him? Poor hero in the climax is left alone.
Film doesn't have any entertainment, emotions or romance because of these lapses.
3) Music
There are 8 songs but zero chartbuster.
4) Editing
Despite two hours duration it still looks stretched like a rubber. It just drags.
Box Office Verdict
Film was released without much promotion. It will go widely unnoticed. Opening is below average. It would struggle to reach double digit (10 Cr) mark.
Doctor G has got 'A' certificate, hence, children and family audience will likely stay away from the film.
Budget is only 35 crore. It will struggle to recover this also. Ayushmaan Khuranna has reduced his fees (from 25 crore to 15 crore) as his last 3 films flopped. He might need to reduce it further and charge 5-7 crore.
