Film Will Struggle To Do A Decent Business In The First Week!

Film- "Jersey"

Rating- 2/ 5

Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri.

Producer: Dil Raju, Aman Gill, Suryadevara Naga Vamsi.

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapur.

Writer: Gowtam Tinnanuri.

Cinematography: Anil Mehta.

Editor: Naveen Nooli.

Music: Anirudh Ravichander.

Filmography:

Shahid Kapoor: "Rangoon" (2017), "Padmaavat" (2018), "Welcome to New York" (2018), "Batti Gul Meter Chalu" (2018), "Kabir Singh" (2019)

Mrunal Thakur: "Batla House" (2019), "Ghost Stories" (2020), $Aankh Micholi" (2020), "Toofan" (2021), "Dhamaka" (2021).

Story:

Jersey is about a cricketer who quits cricket and decides to revive his career at the age of 36 for his son’s dream and prove his ability.

Plus Points:

1) Shahid Kapoor (as Arjun) has acted quite well. He played the character as father and cricketer nicely.

Mrunal Thakur is not a perfect heroine material, however, she has done a decent job.

Pankaj Kapur as a father figure coach of Shahid kapoor acted well and conveyed the exact feeling of the story. Though it’s sad to see him having a similar expression in most part of the film.

2) Good photography, locations, background score and other technical aspects.

Minus Point:

1) The director (Gowtam Tinnanuri) failed to make a great sports film. It’s based on cricket but there is a hardly any exciting or thrilling match which hold your nerves.

2) Thin story line which is illogical and hardly convincing. Premise on which the film has been based (to buy a t-shirt of Rs 500 for his son) doesn’t look convincing. Shahid could have easily borrowed Rs 500 from his friends who are gamblers and party animals. But when he finally gets the courage to ask them, they have chillar in their pockets. Why couldn’t he simply his father figure coach to give 500 bucks!

Shahid wife throws a party for her son and even she can’t buy a t-shirt of Rs 500😐

3) A major drawback is when Shahid Kapoor wants to be cricketer again and his wife doesn't support him. Why has she been portrayed in a negative character? And all of a sudden in the climax she turns positive? It’s poor writing all the way.

4) Inspite of Shahid being a ex-top ranji player, most of the officials and cricketers are not aware of his personality. There are many such pointless and illogical scenes in the film.

5) Jersey Telugu version was a big hit but it's not necessary that the same film in Hindi has to be a hit (Kabir Singh was a sheer fluke).

6) Film has been stretched unnecessarily. First half only revolves on how to buy T-Shirt of Rs 500. Then it moves at a lethargic pace without any entertainment, romance or action (except for one long smooching scene of Shahid and Mrunal). It is a drag. In the second half, once Shahid decides to be a cricketer again, film picks up speed. Many scenes could have been trimmed. Poor Editing!

7) The music score could do better.

Box Office:

Film will struggle to do a decent business in the first week. Might prove to be a losing proposition for all those who are connected with this.

It would have been prudent on part of the producer to have a premier of the film on OTT platforms to recover the cost. Now he will get peanuts from OTT.

Film is made of a massive budget of 90 crore (40 crore Shahid Kapoor fees) and got 5 percent opening during Friday morning shows (very poor).

Inspite of several postponement of release, viewers do not seem interested at all for this one.
