Liger’s (Vijay Devarakonda) only aim is to become a national MMA champion. He and his mom (Ramya Krishna) land in Mumbai to pursue their dreams.
Liger gets trained in MMA but the twist in the tale arises when he gets cheated on by a rich girl Tanya (Ananya Pandey). The rest of the story is about how the heartbroken Liger gets back in form and wins the international MMA championship.
This film is a Hindi debut of Vijay Devkonda and Mike Tyson. After Janhvi Kapoor refused due to dates issue, Ananya was roped in.
Plus Points
1) Beginning action scene and production design are decent.
Minus points
1) Vijay has made disastrous Bollywood debut. What did he think? Acting is not all about doing a few stunts with stammering dialogue delivery.
Ananya Pandey is a perfect example of nepotism who has been casted by the badashah of nepotism Mr Karan Johar. She looks dumb and not so pretty. Couldn’t deliver a single decent scene! Zero screen presence. She looked ordinary in most scenes with pathetic dance movements.
Ramya Krishnan is still living in the Bahubali era. Her acting and expressions are the same. Ronit Roy was hired just to give lectures than teach martial arts to the hero and his students. Chunky Panadey is lost in the drama as a father of Ananya Pandey. Amongst the rest of the cast, no one impresses.
2) Puri Jagannadh couldn’t deliver a good film. He portrays Vijay Devkonda as a man with disability. His biggest mistake! The audience loves to see Vijay's flawless dialogue delivery and would be disappointed of his stammering act.
Puri Jagannadh has made come back into Bollywood after 11 years of gap but failed miserably to deliver an entertaining film. 90% of his job is done by the action director.
A free advice to Mr Puri who is planning to shift his base to Mumbai. Sir, please do not come here or else soon you'd be out of the Telugu industry as well.
3) Thin storyline - No efforts were taken by the director cum writer to come up with a decent story. Screenplay is horrible too. Poor writer is no excuse just because the hero stammers.
Iss film ke baad, koi bhi maa apne bete ka naam liger nahi rakhegi.
4) Music hurts the ears.
a)The liger hunt theme (Farhad Bhiwandiwala)
b) Akdi pakdi (Dev Negi, Pawni panday, Lijo George)
c) Waat laga denge (Vijay Devkonda)
d) Aafat(Zara S Khan, Tanishk Bagchi)
e) Coka 2.0 (Sukhe, Lisa mishara)
f) Attack (Farhad Bhiwandiwala).
Even pictureization of the songs are ordinary without much choreography. Seems forced into the drama. In fact, Bhojpuri films songs are thousand times better.
5) Editing is bad. Film is slow, particularly the second half. It drags. It’s a tedious watch with useless drama and maha-ghatia action.
6) Liger also joins the long list of films that blame women for men getting distracted. Wonder how much time the team spent on script writing!
If only Puri Jagannadh, Charmme Kaur and Karan Johar had set aside half of their resources on the script instead of promotions, Liger could have been a much better film.
Film was targeted to be a crossbreed cinema; filmed simultaneously in Telugu and Hindi. Aimed as the first pan-Indian film, Vijay Deverakonda surely misses the punch. At 140 minutes, it seems long by the end. One can’t help but feel, ‘Why did I get into this Aafat?’
7) Action scenes are routine and repetitive despite film being 90% action. Even the national and international martial art tournaments are ordinarily shot without any thrills.
Action scences with great boxer Mike Tyson don’t generate any curiosity. It’s weird that the film didn’t cash in with his name.
His role could be performed by any local or dharvi guy. Sheer wast of money to cast Mike Tyson with low following by today’s youth.
Film is devoid of all sorts of entertainment: comedy, action, romance or emotion.
Box Office Verdict
Film was released pan-India on Thursday in Tamil and Telugu including morning show. But surprisingly, Hindi shows starter after 8 pm only. Why Mr. Johar?
Were you frightened that Bollywood critics would rip your film off with bad reviews and the first day collection would get effected?
Film was made with a massive budget of over ₹ 125 crores. It would be a struggle to recover the investment. Might do good business in south till weekend. Hindi version could struggle to do lifetime business of ₹25 crore.
